New Work of SOrts

Wow!  I can't believe it's been so long since I have posted new work.  But, honestly I haven't really created anything new up until this last week.  As I have told many of my artist friends.  I am going through what I call my mid life crisis in creativity.  As an artist, I have undergone many changes in direction and mediums throughout my artist career.  Once I even went a whole year without making art.  Cycles are a fickle thing sometimes.  Part of this is probably due to the fact that I produce lots of work when I am in the zone.  Suffice it to say, I am going through a creative and emotional house cleaning of sorts.  This can all be traced back, at least in my mind, to the battle with cancer last year.  One tends to go through a period where you question everything and realize you want to make everything count in some way.

What I have been doing is teaching a little.  Last weekend I taught a class for the Gilded Lilies of Columbus Ohio.  The class is called Mediums Make Your Art Go Round, and is all about using acrylic mediums in your art.  The class learns what the various mediums are and what they do.  Then we embark on making some fun stuff using the mediums.  So, the piece posted below was started in that class.  It is a clay head glued to a heavy illustration board.  Then mounted on a 5x7 inch Masonite panel.  The background is a recycled map from a National Geographic magazine.  Then I applied crackle paste to the area around the head.  Next I applied layers of paper saturated with super heavy matte gel so that I could sculpt with it.  I used this to create the robs and shroud like elements.  It was all painted and then antiqued.

I call this piece "The Last Prophet" and is mounted in a frame made of old wood.  The piece is 5x7 inches.

On another completely different note here.  If you are interested in taking a class with me or any of the other instructors at the following event, please check it out.

I will be teaching a class on Friday April 15th called Personal Mojo.  You can find the information for Artiscape here.  This is a great event for mixed media arts.  The classes are ala carte so you can take what you want without feeling like your paying for stuff you don't want.  Anyway, if you are interested please give it a look see.

Well, my friends that's it for now.  I have a bunch of little things in the works and I hope to get back to figures soon.  We shall see how the ole' muse plays out.

Dear Cody,
Dont worry about the muse return one day you are doing dishes so you dont feel too guilty about not working and the next thing you know your loved ones are in your studio taking you picture so they remember what you look like! Vicki

Hey cody,

love the use of the map in this. Gives me ideas for my AFIC class!
I fully get where you are in your creative space. At one point I had totally turned my back on my inner artist and pretended she didn't exist. It took a great deal of time to dust her off and get her up and creating again.
Keep at it! Best Wishes,

Joyce
