So Now What?

Today it is a cold rainy day here in Codyland.  A bit like my mood.  No I am not depressed.  But, rather contemplative.  I have been revisiting some old places in my mind of late.  Trying to navigate around who I am as an artist.  Recently I have noticed something rather profound about myself as an artist.  I must have a form of ADD.  It is near to impossible for me to stick with one form of expression or medium.  I am bouncing around from sculpture, painting to photography.  I love working in all these media.  But, while attending a few art shows this past week, I began to wonder if this way of being wasn't a hindrance? Is there a place in the art world for someone like me?  It seems most artists concentrate on one medium or process.  Sure, I can just be happy with who I am and how I make art.  But, if I want to be a part of the "Art Community" than should I conform?

I am at my most happiest when I am creating and discovering new things through my art and creative process. My hope is that this will be accepted no matter what form it takes. So, today I am a photographer, tomorrow a painter, the next day after that who knows. The important thing is to never stop creating.  This gives me life and lets my soul shine forth unto the world.

Since we are on the subject of creating.  Here is a look at what is on my work table at the moment.  I am creating a painting for a secret Santa gift.


It is an 8x8 inch panel.  I am intending to create a scene of looking at a planet from it's moon. I love those big gas giants and how mysterious they look. It will be fun to see how this one turns out.  I will post a picture or two as it progresses.  I have to have it finished by next Saturday.

Here is an abstract portrait I took of a friend at a restaurant last night.  I have been reading about using out of focus images to create abstracted portraits.  I love how this one turned out.


Not bad for a little point and shoot camera. Plus the meal was superb.

I don't think creating in different mediums is a hinderance. It means we love to create whatever medium is in front of us! LOL

Karen you are right. Variety is the spice of life. My question and observation was due to a few art venues and their shows. It would be nice to interview the artists that participate in some of these shows to see if they too create in different mediums. I know painters also sketch. I don't count that as it is a part of the process. But, do they sculpt or make mixed media pieces?

I won't stop making what I make. But, it seems some visitors to my studio seem a bit confused and think there are five artists instead of two.

Hello out there on this rather balmy Sunday afternoon. I hope you all are having a nice weekend. I thought I'd post the three projects I have been working on for the past three months. I have been making some books for an upcoming show at Kennedy Heights Art Center here in Cincinnati. The show is called "Contents Unknown" and the premise is books in containers. Now the idea was to conceal a book in a container. But, many of us in the show have taken liberties on this. Some of mine aren't obvious when you look at the box. But, since we have to display the contents as well it will be obvious what the box held. This first set of images is for a book called "Memories in Blue". This book is a sort of picture/diary of the pivotal moments in my life that made me who I am. Some good and some not so good. I wanted to give an honest yet abbreviated snapshot of my life and those moments that shaped me. I created the images as cyanotypes on cotton fabric. S

ADO Art Dolls Only Elements Challenge - Water

OK , without further ado here is my entry for the ADO Art Dolls Only challenge The Elements . Please go visit the ADO blog to see some of the great entries for this challenge. Introducing for the first time anywhere, the Mergoblin . He is the first of his kind to grace my blog and studio. Several of his relatives are planning a visit real soon. He is a polymer clay one of a kind sculpt. He has a recycled head that was made for an earlier project. The eyes are fresh water pearls that have been dyed. His tail is made from a type of willow tree. I know the photography isn't spectacular but, I wanted to get him up on the blog in time. Here is a closer view of his head area. This is the other side view. He is mounted on a wooden base suspended by a wire inserted into a brass tube. I painted the brass tube blue to match the stand. This was a fun challenge that got me to think outside my usual box. Hope you enjoy him.
